HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION – CHARGES UPGRADED – C11-178995
As previously released, on Thursday, August 24th, 2011 at approximately 11:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue for a report of a male and female that had been assaulted. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located a 48 year old male suffering from serious upper body injuries. Paramedics attended and transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition. An 18 year old female was also located with upper body injuries requiring medical treatment.   
 
The investigation has revealed that a group of people were outside a residence within the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue when two male suspects approached them. A brief verbal dispute occurred, however the suspects left the area. A short time later, the two male suspects returned now armed with a baseball bat.  It was at this time the suspects came upon a 48 year old male and 18 year old female who were unaware of the previous dispute. The suspects began assaulting the male victim to the upper body causing him to fall to the ground. The 18 year old female came to his aid at which time she was assaulted to the upper body. 
 
The female victim has since been treated and released from hospital however the male victim remained. 
 
A number of individuals were located nearby and taken into custody. 
 
As a result of the investigation, two male youths, both 15 years of age, had initially been charged with the following offences:
 
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Assault with a weapon
- Aggravated assault
 
On August 30th, 2011, the 48 year old male victim succumbed to his injuries.
 
The two male youths were arrested on August 30th, 2011 and charged with 2nd Degree Murder. They have been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.  
 
 
 
INTERNET LURING – ARREST R11-26301
Between January and March 2011, a 45 year old male was allegedly involved in luring a 13 year old female for a sexual purpose while chatting on a social networking website.
 
The investigation has revealed that the suspect communicated with the female victim through Facebook during this time frame. At some point during this interaction, the parent of the 13 year old female discovered the inappropriate chat and subsequently notified police.
 
Members of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) entered into an investigation.
 
As a result of the ongoing investigation, a warrant was executed on August 30th, 2011 at approximately 8:00 a.m., at a residence in the North Kildonan area of the city. Evidence was seized and a male was taken into custody.
 
The 45 year old male is facing charges of: Internet luring to commit Sexual Assault and Internet luring to commit Sexual Interference.
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.

ATTEMPT VEHICLE ROBBERY – C11-183800
On August 31st, 2011 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Uniform members responded to an attempt vehicle robbery incident in the area of the 1300 block of Beaumont Street.
 
Attending members met with a 34 year old female victim who advised that she was confronted by an unknown male while parked in her vehicle in front of her residence. The suspect knocked on her window and subsequently produced a weapon. The suspect then began threatening the victim with the weapon and demanded that she exit the vehicle. The female remained inside the vehicle and the suspect eventually fled the area on foot. No injuries occurred as a result of the incident.
 
Police were notified and the suspect was described as follows:
 
·        Caucasian
·        Male
·        5'9" tall
·        Short light brown wavy hair
·        Wearing a dark hoodie
·        In possession of a weapon
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 6 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-2877 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating a missing 11 year old child, Tyrus MANN. Tyrus was last seen in the Elmwood area of the city on the evening of Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 8:10 pm.
 
Tyrus is described as: Aboriginal, 5'3" tall, 130lbs, short black wavy hair, large build and brown eyes.  He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and black sweatpants.
 
 
 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service is concerned about the well-being of this child and is requesting anyone with information as to his whereabouts to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Person's Unit at 986-6250.

WEAPON ARRESTS C11-182599
On August 29th, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crimes Unit became involved in a weapons related investigation at an address located in the 200 block of Grassie Boulevard.
 
As a result of the investigation, officers, including members of the Tactical Support Team attended to the residence for the purpose of executing a search warrant. Upon doing so, a male suspect was observed fleeing the residence while in possession of an unknown object. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He was found to be in possession of the following:
 
  • Sawed-off shotgun
  • Machete
  • Knife
After executing the search warrant, four additional occupants were taken into custody. A search of the residence yielded the following:
 
  • Two canisters of bear spray
  • Knife
Three adult males, one adult female and a male youth are facing numerous firearm related offences. The adult male observed fleeing the residence has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre and the remainder were released on a Promise to Appear.
 
 
FRAUD INVESTIGATION – ARREST R11-76344
During the month of August 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service in cooperation with Manitoba Lotteries Corporation (MLC) and Western Canada Lotteries Corporation (WCLC) became involved in a fraud related investigation.
 
As a result of a lengthy investigation, it was discovered that a 61 year old male victim had purchased a lottery ticket on July 14th, 2011 which was valid for five draws. The first draw occurred at which time the victim checked his ticket, only to learn that he was not in fact a winner. Two more draws subsequently occurred when the victim attended to a gas bar located in the Maples area of the city for the purpose of having his ticket verified.
 
A 30 year old male employee checked the victim's tickets and advised that he was a $5.00 winner. The employee returned the validation ticket and the $5.00 winnings, however failed to return the replacement tickets to the victim that was still valid for two more draws.
 
On July 27th, 2011, a fourth draw occurred. The employee, still in possession of the stolen tickets, scans them and learns that he has a winning ticket in the amount of $90,641.40.
 
On August 2nd, 2011, the employee attended to the WCLC claiming to be a winner. As a result of some inconsistencies, WCLC notified MLC at which time an initial investigation commenced.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service were notified and continued with the investigation.
 
On August 25th, 2011, the 30 year old male employee was advised of the investigation and placed under arrest. He is facing the following charges:
 
  • Theft Under $5000.00
  • Fraud Over $5000.00
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
 
 
TRAFFIC PURSUIT – ARREST C11-183022
On August 30th, 2011 at approximately 1:45 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Tactical Support Team observed a Dodge Neon being operated in an erratic manner in the North End area of the city.
 
Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Charles Street and Redwood Avenue; however the suspect fled the area at a high rate of speed. As a result, a traffic pursuit occurred which ended in the area of the 200 block of Manitoba Avenue. In an attempt to evade police further, the suspect vehicle collided with a cruiser car including two parked trucks.
 
Due to the efforts of the officers involved, 25 year old Darrel Ryan Joseph LAGIMODIERE was taken into custody and charged with the following: Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight form Police Officer and Fail to Comply with Conditions of a Recognizance.
 
He was detained.  
  
 
STABBING ARREST C11-182679
On August 29th, 2011 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Uniform members responded to a stabbing incident which occurred in the area of the first 100 block of Marion Street.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 30 year old male and 49 year old male became involved in a verbal dispute. The matter escalated at which time the 30 year old male was stabbed multiple times to the upper body. The suspect fled in a vehicle and the victim attended to a nearby clinic where emergency services were summoned.
 
The victim was conveyed to hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable condition.
 
The suspect also attended to a hospital requiring medical attention due to the confrontation. It was at this time he notified police claiming he had been assaulted. Officers attended and subsequently placed the 49 year old male under arrest.
 
He has been charged with Aggravated Assault and detained.
 
 
CHILD ABUSE IMAGERY – ARREST R11-14098
Between July 5th and July 11th, 2011, an officer from the Winnipeg Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) utilized an online undercover persona to make a connection with a suspect on a file sharing program. It was during this interaction that the suspect made numerous videos of child abuse imagery available to the undercover officer.
 
As a result of the investigation, the suspect was identified as residing in the Winnipeg area, and a search warrant was subsequently executed on August 24th, 2011 at approximately 8:20 a.m.
 
A 20 year old male was arrested and is facing charges of: Accessing, Possessing and Making available Child Pornography.
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.

FRAUD ARREST                                                 C11-180779
On Saturday, August 27th, 2011 just after 2:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to a night club in the 200 block of Bannatyne Ave. regarding an altercation. Two males who were employed as security by the club had detained a suspect who had assaulted them both after they attempted to intervene in a fight.
 
Andrio Andre MARTIN, 25, was arrested at the scene and charged with Assault x 2.
 
It was determined that Martin was on charge for numerous offences in Alberta, and was in breach of his release conditions.
 
Further Investigation conducted by the Commercial Crime Unit revealed the accused was also in possession of numerous counterfeit identity documents with fictitious names, as well as bank cards in fictitious names.
 
Martin had apparently travelled to Winnipeg from Toronto one day earlier under an assumed name supported by a counterfeit driver's licence.
 
Martin was charged with 42 additional offences including:
 
·        Identity Fraud (Fraudulently Obtaining Transportation)
·        Fail to comply with Recognizance x 2
·        Possess Government Identity Documents x 7
·        Possess Forged Documents x 7
·        Possess Identity Information x 7
·        Possess Counterfeit Mark x 7
·        Possess Identity Information x 5
·        Identity Fraud x 5
·        Unauthorized Use of Credit Card Data
 
Martin was detained in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
 
COMMERCIAL BREAK IN                                  C11-181729
Sunday, August 28th, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the Windsor Park Golf Course for a report of a break in.
 
An employee of the course had found several golf carts were damaged and numerous carts had been left at various locations around the course. In addition, the course greens had sustained significant damage. Three females were observed riding carts on the course, but fled under the fence when they saw employees. The suspects are described as:
 
  1. Female, white shirt, white tank top, wavy shoulder length brown hair. Blue or green eyes, 5'5" – 5'6". approximately 110 lbs, 17 -20 years
  2. Female, greenish blanket or towel, tattoo on left side of chest with dyed red hair and dark skin.
  3. Female, taller, jaw length hair, with jean shorts and a red plaid shirt.
 
At approximately 7:15 a.m. police were dispatched to the parking lot at the corner of Fermor St. and St. Annes Road to a report of four males driving golf carts in the area.
 
The suspects were described as:
 
1.      Caucasian, 20 – 25 yrs 5'7" – 5'9", stocky build with wide shoulders, light brown longer hair, wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.
2.      Caucasian, 20 years, 5'6", skinny build, short dark curly hair, wearing black pants, black shoes, and a black hoodie with white writing.
 
Numerous carts were located in the Seine River.
 
Damage estimate is approximately $30,000. The investigation is being conducted by East District Crime Unit.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

SUSPICIOUS DEATH- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION      C11-180964
As previously released, on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 just after 9:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue for a report of a deceased female that had been located. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a deceased female in the rear of a vacant building within the 700 block of Main Street. The victim appeared to have injuries to her upper body.
 
The deceased female has been identified as April Helen HORNBROOK, 24 years of Winnipeg. 
 
Members of the Homicide Unit are continuing with this investigation. 
 
Anyone who has any information regarding the victim, or anyone who has had any recent contact with the victim, is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
ASSAULT UPDATE- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION    C11-175470
As previously released, on August 20th, 2011 at approximately 3:25 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a fight involving two males in the area of the 100 block of Burrows Avenue.
 
Attending members located an injured 22 year old male suffering from upper body injuries. He was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, where he had been upgraded to guarded but stable condition.
 
On August 21st, 2011 Division 12 Uniform Members conducted a traffic stop in the area of Portage Avenue and Booth Drive where a suspect male was arrested without incident. 
 
Division 13 Crime Unit Members continued with the investigation and charged a 38 year old male with aggravated assault and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.
 
On August 25th, 2011, Winnipeg Police were notified that the victim has succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Robert ROURKE, 22 years of Winnipeg.
 
Gregory Troy GOVEREAU, 38 years of no fixed address is now facing one count of second degree murder for his alleged involvement into this incident.   
 
GOVEREAU was returned back into custody. 
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON- ARRESTS        C11-181195
On August 27th, 2011, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a group of individuals had gathered within the west lane of the 800 block of Main Street, when a male who was unknown to the group walked past them and directed comments towards a female within the group. 
 
This 23 year old male continued walking southbound on Main Street. As the male approached Dufferin Avenue this previous group of individuals followed him to this area and a verbal altercation occurred betweenthis male, a 21 year old male who happened to be in the area, and this group. The verbal altercation escalated when one of the suspects in the group produced a knife resulting in the both male victims sustaining a stab wound to the torso area. 
 
When both victims fell to ground as a result of the stabbing, the group proceeded to physically assault both victim's about their upper and lower bodies. 
 
A number of concerned passer-bys contacted police. Upon arrival, officers located the two male victims, aged 21 and 23 years, who were conveyed to the hospital in critical condition for treatment of their injuries.
 
The group of suspects attempted to flee however officers located them within the area and they were taken into custody without incident.
 
Both victims were later upgraded to stable condition. 
 
As a result of the continued investigation by uniform members, division 13 detectives and identification officers, the following individuals have been charged for their alleged involvement into these incidents; 
 
A 32 year old female and a 35 year old male, both from Winnipeg have both been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. 
 
A 24 year old female, of Winnipeg has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery with a weapon and breach of probation x2.  
 
This incident is continuing by the Division 13 Crime Unit. 
 
Anyone who has any information about this incident and has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION- ARREST        C11-181350
On Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at approximately 8:20 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the 1st 100 block of Langside Street for a report of a garbage bin that had been set on fire and a suspicious male that was seen within the area. 
 
Upon arrival, fire crews extinguished the fire which had caused approximately $100 to the garbage bin. Patrolling officers, along with a canine unit began searching the area for a suspect male who had fled the scene prior to officer's arrival. 
 
 As a result of a track by the canine unit, a suspect male was located near the river bank area a short distance away, where he was taken into custody without incident. 
 
George Leslie GUIMOND, 53 years of no fixed address, has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident: 
 
-          Arson damage to property and possession of incendiary materials
 
GUIMOND has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

On Saturday, August 27th, 2011 just after 9:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue for a report of a deceased female that had been located. 
 
Members of the Homicide Unit and the Identification Unit are continuing with this investigation. 
 
No further information is available.
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- UPDATE             C11-181126
As previously released, on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Main Street for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.
 
Paramedics transported the male driver of the motorcycle to the hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Saturday, August 27th, 2011  
3:45 p.m.

 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- ROADWAY CLOSED             C11-181126
On Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Main Street for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.
 
Paramedics have transported one male to the hospital in critical condition. 
 
Southbound Main Street is closed at St. Anthony Avenue.  Motorists are requested to avoid the area and to choose an alternate route.
 
Cadet and Uniform members, along with Central Traffic Unit investigators are currently on scene.
